Letter from the President: It's Silver Spikes Season!

Hello PRSA Sierra Nevada members, colleagues and friends!

Thank you so much to everyone who attended our first luncheon of the year with Matt Seltzer, APR. It was such a wonderfully nerdy marriage of data and storytelling. If you missed it, catch up on Matt's greatest hits on our recent episode of the Better PR podcast. You can also find Matt's takeaways in his book, The Creative Catalyst: How to Create Better Marketing By Asking (And Answering) Better Marketing Questions. (Unless you're one of the six lucky attendees who got a free copy!)

Our focus as a board is now entirely on our Silver Spike Awards. I can speak for my fellow board members when I say that we look forward to honoring our region's outstanding professionals and their work. The deadline to submit entries and nominations is approaching on March 6, so don't wait and submit your entries today!

We are also thrilled to announce the Awards will take place on May 24 at The_Theater. If you want to sponsor the chapter's most prestigious and well-attended event, please email the VP of Silver Spikes, Tiffany East, APR. In addition, if you're interested in lending a few hours to judge our sister chapter's entries (many hands make light work!), please email VP of Recognition Megan Duggan.

I'm excited about how inspiring this year has already been, and I hope to meet each of you at one of our upcoming events (perhaps at our virtual APR Curious event on April 13!) After several years participating in PRSA and several more working in PR, the value of the relationships I've built in this community is now a part of my DNA.

With gratitude,

Becca Allured, APR
President, PRSA Sierra Nevada
Public Information Officer, Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy

Silver Spikes Submissions Are Open!

A word from Estipona Group on the agency’s 2022 Silver Spike Award for its Vax Nevada Days (VND) campaign:

"Estipona Group was thrilled to be recognized with a Silver Spike. VND might have been the toughest and most impactful campaign our team has ever worked on, and to be recognized for that effort was an honor. The campaign taught us many things about coalition building, thinking on our feet and not being afraid to say yes! We were already so proud of the work we had accomplished and our client was thrilled, so being recognized with a Silver Spike was really the cherry on top.”

This year’s Silver Spikes submissions are OPEN and we encourage you to share your work. The deadline is March 6, 11:59 p.m. Don’t miss the opportunity to be recognized for your work, and submit your entry today!

Our Local Chapter

Letter from the President
Hello PRSA Sierra Nevada members, colleagues and friends!

I hope your year is off to an inspiring and empowering start—I know mine is. I had the extreme privilege to lead our (incredible!) 2023 PRSA Sierra Nevada Board of Directors in our first meeting of the year, which doubles as a planning and team-building retreat. I am bursting with enthusiasm about the impressive team of professionals leading the chapter this year and all we have planned for your professional development, networking and recognition.

If you haven’t already, get to know your board members. You’ll have a great opportunity to network with them and other fellow members at our first event of the year on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023. This upcoming luncheon will focus on research's crucial role in public relations, featuring Vegas-based market research expert Matt Seltzer. It’s a can’t-miss opportunity for research nerds and data heads, which, as I learned while earning my accreditation, should be all of us!

Thank you all for your significant contributions to our community and your continued membership and participation in PRSA Sierra Nevada. The work you do every day is so inspiring. I am honored to take the helm of this organization, which has empowered me for years to become the kind of practitioner and leader I admired early in my career (which is many of you!)

With gratitude,
Becca Allured, APR

How to Get the Research You Need to Inform and Improve Your PR Strategies

Data is the foundation of any successful communication strategy. But, if you’re strapped for resources or running a one-person show, accessing in-house market research isn’t always an option. Learn about the tools that can provide valuable information about your target audience and help hone your strategies to be even more effective.
  • Speaker: Matt Seltzer, S2 Marketing, Las Vegas
  • When: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023. Networking begins at 11:30 a.m. The program and lunch begin at noon.
  • Where: National Automobile Museum, 1 Museum Drive, Reno, NV 89501
  • Tickets: $45 Non-Member, $30 Member, $25 Student

Learn more and register by Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023!

As communications professionals, we all know the saying “Data is King”—because when it comes to developing and implementing a public relations strategy, the right data can be the difference between success and failure. But, if you’re managing a one-person shop, a small or midsize agency, or an internal department with limited resources, quick access to in-house market research isn’t always an option.

So, what’s the best way to get the right data to define your target audience and develop compelling communication strategies? Ask Matt Seltzer, APR, a professional marketing research and strategy consultant, at the next PRSA Sierra Nevada luncheon set for Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023.

He’ll cover the tools every practitioner can use to uncover valuable information that can, in turn, be used to optimize communication, boost innovation and visibility, and improve outcomes.

Seltzer, Partner and Head of Research and Strategy and founder at S2 Marketing in Las Vegas, has worked with agencies and in-house marketing teams for nearly two decades. He’s overseen research and marketing projects for brands such as YouTube, Las Vegas, CBS, Brightline, Global Kinetics and more.

A lifelong Las Vegas resident and a proud graduate of the University of Nevada Las Vegas, he holds degrees and certifications in marketing, organizational psychology, public relations, data analysis and data visualization. He served as the American Marketing Association Las Vegas president from 2021-2022 and is currently the Vice President of Programs for the Public Relations Society of America Las Vegas Chapter.

February Luncheon: Don’t Guess—Know!

Letter from the President
Hello, PRSA Sierra Nevada!

It’s hard to believe this is my last time writing as your chapter president. It’s been an honor to serve in this role and I couldn’t have done it without the support of our amazing 2022 board.
